I hope everyone has had a refreshing and renewing summer that was full of adventure and memories. This is going to be a great year! Here a few things to keep in mind during this school year:
- We will have a rolling schedule for specials. Day 1 - PE, Day 2 - Art, Day 3 - PE, Day 4 - Music. It will then loop back to Day 1. You WILL have specials each day.
- 5th Grade is NOT using student agendas this year. We will use a take home folder for student handouts or student work that needs to be sent home. Parents: please look for this purple folder!
- Please be sure you have signed up for our class Remind notifications.
- Students may eat snack at any time. However, I ask that snacks not stain fingers. i.e., do not send Doritos, Takis, chocolate, Cheetos, etc. Good options are Goldfish, carrots, trail mix, etc. The only beverage allowed in the classroom is water.
- Our daily schedule is posted HERE.
Academics:
Math - Place value and decimals. See this great parent tip sheet for our first math unit!
Reading - We will start the year with independent reading and Fountas and Pinnell testing. Media Center Orientation will be on Aug 12. I hope everyone participated in a summer reading program! Writing - Narrative writing of small moment stories.
Science - we will have another great first day STEM activity ... want a hint? This year is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing.
Social Studies - We will start with a quick review of the Civil War and Reconstruction from 4th grade. Then, we will move on to Cowboys and Cattle Trails! Check out this 3 mins video from Oklahoma if you want to get ahead! Can you answer who, what, when, where, why, and how about cattle drives? You will be able to after that video!
