We are wrapping up our poetry unit on Friday! To prepare for our next unit, we need donations of candy pumpkins, marshmallow pumpkins, and/or Halloween Peeps. After Halloween, please keep an eye out for cheap or free small (about 2-3 lb) pumpkins. If you can send in one or two, we we'll be grateful!

If your child is participating in the Math-A-Thon PLEASE be sure to sign up on our Math-A-Thon page by clicking the image to the left. This is a great and easy way to help raise money for St. Jude, and to help your child reach his or her goal. Congratulations to Hannah, Benjamin, and Angelina for being the top participants online! The Math-A-Thon will officially end on November 8th. All checks (made payable to St. Jude) and other donations must be submitted on or before this date. What did your classroom look like when you took a test? Probably something like the picture shown left. We sat in our desks afraid to move, hunched over our papers, quietly dreading the next hour. So, what does testing look like in our classroom? We have music playing. The kids are quietly singing, and literally laying all around the room. And the best part? Every single student is on task and working productively. Image courtesy of http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Test_%28student_assessment%29.jpeg One of my awesome first graders made all of these masks at home! Thanks, Logan (aka, Frog)!!! We have been practicing fluency in our Creepy Creatures unit by reading the East African folk tale The Most Terrible Creature in the World. Hare, (aka Hunter) is in there too, but hiding. Sneaky Tiger, Madison, is giving him bunny ears, Great job, First Grade! Students chose a song that interested them. They then went through an in-depth process called TPCASTTing to analyze the lyrics of the song. I'm so impressed! These kiddos have completely rewritten popular songs, removing all figurative language. See if you can guess the songs they have translated! Click on each student's name below for a video! Be sure to leave a comment on the Teacher Tube site telling each student your guess.

Check out the original activity from ReadWriteThink.org at www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/30738_analysis.pdf We are mind mapping! I'm so impressed with the work these kids are producing. The picture above is a mind map of Ron Koertge that Cale created. Way to go, Cale! Click HERE for some digital mind maps created by Adam, Victoria, and Rylee.
