Our first unit will be a review of the Civil War from 4th grade. Distance Learning: Distance Learning days are NOT vacation days. Parents, and Guardians - We need your help in reinforcing this to students. Check-in time for 5th graders will be 8:00a.m. via Google Meet. All necessary links and work will be on Canvas (a familiar tool for your child). Students who do not check in and/or complete the day's work will be counted as absent. Chromebooks and chargers MUST come back Thursday morning. Thank you for helping us assure every child is successful! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! Important Dates: Wed, 9/23 - Distance Learning Day Fri, 9/25 - Food Corp Lesson (wear clothes to work in the garden!) Wed, 10/28 - Distance Learning Day Welcome back! It's going to be a great year! One thing I am truly passionate about, is reading and literacy. Last year three classes at EJES joined Tome Society. I'm excited about the It List for this year! To get these amazing books into the hands of our kiddos, here's what you can do:
Do you play Minecraft? Do you want to earn enrichment bonus points? Try one of these challenges! Send a screenshot or a pic to Mrs. Huss. It's always fun to play together! Invite a friend to your game!
Running out if things to do? Try one of these Minecraft building challenges! Want someone to play with? A lot of Huss Class kiddos have Minecraft and/or Discord!
Ok. I admit it. I am kind of digging this whole distance learning thing. It is new, a little scary, and a lot of work, but I like it! I am immesely proud to say that I have seen 100% of my students every day so far! The kiddos are working hard on WWII interactive HyperSlides, learning to use Canva to create infographics, keeping up with thier math on Zearn, reading independent novels and responding on Flipgrid, increasing thier word sense on Freckle, and trying out a new to us platform called Quill for grammar practice. Parents and Guardians, THANK YOU! Thank you for raising kids who know when and how to be independent learners and to hold themselves accountable. Is it easier for some than others? Sure. Will there be tears some days? Probably. Will we get through this? Undoubtedly. If you know me, chances are you know that I have a love/hate relationship with technology. But during this time of social distancing, technology is the tool that truly brings us all together. Just an hour or so ago, I hosted a Gimkit where your awesome kids, me, Ms. Rogers, my brother in Finland, and Ms. Bell in Germany all played together! If you don't know what a Gimkit is, your kids do! And they love it. Our plans will change as we learn what works best for our kids. For now they will find each day's plans on thier Digital Learning HyperDoc on thier Clever Portal. By using the Clever Portal, this keeps the document secure for our class only. As we work through week two and head to week three of distance learning, I wanted to take a moment to try to give you a little insight to each digital tool we are using. This isn't meant to be a comprehensive list, but rather a quick overview to provide parent information. If you have questions, message me. I'm here. Math - Zearn Grammar - Quill Word Study - Freckle Reading responses - Flipgrid and don't worry, we are serious about your child's privacy For now, friends. Stay home. Stay well. Flatten the curve. Huge thank yous go to Ms. Kaycie Rogers and Mrs. Laurie Bunn - my dynamic co-teachers for distance learning! You guys rock! ❤
Academics:
Math - We are now in Module 3 and learning to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators. Here is a great parent tip sheet for this unit. Reading - Students each have a copy of the graphic novel Treaties, Trenches, Mud, and Blood by Nathan Hale. This will support our social studies unit. Any reading from this DOES count toward the required 20 mins of nightly reading. Here are some great questions to ask your child after they finish reading their novel or listening to their audio book each night. Writing - Students are researching to write their Difference Makers Fair reports. I have a handful of students who are done! Wow! Ask your child about his/her research. Extra work sessions will be held during lunch and recess for students who need to catch up. Science - Coming soon ... ⚡Electricity! Static vs current electricity and simple circuits. Social Studies - World War I. There are so many great sources out there, I don't even know where to begin! If you watch a YouTube video or documentary about WWI and want to share, leave a comment below for others. Important Dates: Tues, 12/3 - Author visit and reading night! Fri, 12/20 - Jan 1/3 - NO SCHOOL Academics:
Math - We are wrapping up Module 1 and will begin Module 2: Multiplying and Dividing Whole Numbers and Decimals soon. See this great parent tip sheet for our next math unit. Reading - Please, please, please help hold your child accountable for the 20 mins of required nightly reading. Here are some great questions to ask your child after they finish reading their novel or listening to their audio book each night. I am so excited that many of the kiddos have selected to read one of the Tome novels. Thank you so much to the families that have donated copies of the books to our class library. We have 25 students, and right now we have 18 Tome novels. Wouldn't it be great to have just a few more? Writing - Narrative writing of small moment stories. This week we are focusing on slowing down and building tension. We have also started writing our Cotton Boll speeches. These are 30 second commercials that will be presented to a panel of judges in November. Science - Coming soon ... vertebrates vs invertebrates preview for Camp Wahsega! Social Studies - Inventors and Inventions from the turn of the century. I have found these four super quick videos (less than 5 mins each) to help your kiddo get a head start on all they need to know. There are some great videos and documentaries out there. I chose these four because they are quick and fun ... especially the Bell one 😁. Try watching them together as a family. Important Dates: Fri, Sept 20 - House Meeting (wear house colors!) Mon, Sept, 23 - Wahsega balance ($50) payments due Academics:
Math - Place value and decimals. See this great parent tip sheet for our first math unit! Reading - We will start the year with independent reading and Fountas and Pinnell testing. Media Center Orientation will be on Aug 12. I hope everyone participated in a summer reading program! Writing - Narrative writing of small moment stories. Science - we will have another great first day STEM activity ... want a hint? This year is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing. Social Studies - We will start with a quick review of the Civil War and Reconstruction from 4th grade. Then, we will move on to Cowboys and Cattle Trails! Check out this 3 mins video from Oklahoma if you want to get ahead! Can you answer who, what, when, where, why, and how about cattle drives? You will be able to after that video! But don't worry. It won't be too much. Students should already be reading for a minimum of 20 minutes each night. Please ask your child about their independent novel, and help hold them accountable for nightly reading.
Beginning Monday, August 26, we will use a platform called Freckle for additional skill based homework. Each child has their login information. Students who do not have access to the internet from home will be allowed to work on Freckle after morning work. What to expect ...
Have questions? Ask! You may message me via Remind or email me. Welcome to the first post of Huss Class Happenings for the 2019-20 school year!
I hope everyone has had a refreshing and renewing summer that was full of adventure and memories. This is going to be a great year! Here a few things to keep in mind during this school year:
Academics: Math - Place value and decimals. See this great parent tip sheet for our first math unit! Reading - We will start the year with independent reading and Fountas and Pinnell testing. Check out this 3 mins video from Oklahoma if you want to get ahead! Can you answer who, what, when, where, why, and how about cattle drives? You will be able to after that video! First of all, enjoy summer. I hope all my kiddos spend time outdoors. I hope they hike. I hope they swim. I hope they explore. I hope they go somewhere they have never been. And I hope they make memories. I also hope they keep everything they learned this year! What can parents do to help? Encourage your child to read, read, read! Read novels and picture books. Spend time with a good audio book. Read brochures for places you visit. Just read! Stay sharp in math by cooking (recipes are full of fractions!), working on Khan Academy, playing on Prodigy or check out the new Summer Slugger program on EverFi using access code 76371040.
Students were asked to choose their own theme songs, and justify why they selected it. Here are their choices! Can you figure out what song belongs to what kid? Enjoy :)

First of all, a HUGE thank you to our amazing School Counselor for working with me on this lesson! You're the best, Mrs. Deans!
We had too much fun on a career and budgeting lesson this morning! First, students each took a career index survey. Then they explored different career paths. Finally, we explored the costs associated with community colleges, public, and private universities. The students learned the value of a budget, and learned a lot about themselves. See their career index surveys in action below! Then, scroll down and check out the career paths they each selected! I can't wait to see them achieve their career goals! #ProudTeacher Don’t get bored over the break!
Stay sparked with these electricity and circuit activities, videos, and eBooks.
How is it December already?!? So much has been happening! I hope your kiddos have been coming home with elaborate tales of balloons popping, Difference Makers Fair ideas, WWI projects in STEM, and A Wrinkle in Time conversations. As we wrap up 2018, we will have a small gift exchange in class. At the beginning of the year each student filled out an "All about me" biography cube. The cubes do not include names, but instead include information about each student. Each student will draw a cube, and then purchase (no more than $2-3) or make a small gift for the owner of the cube. For example, the cube could indicate that the student loves reading. Your child could make a set of bookmarks for him/her. The idea is not to spend money, but to be truly thoughtful about the mystery recipient. We will have our Holiday celebration on Tuesday, December 18. Want to join us or help out? Click the image below! Important Dates:
12/17 - 4H (wear green or 4H shirts!) 12/18 - Holiday party and last day of school for Winter Break! 1/3 - First day back for students! Check out some of these great resources over the break!
I could not be more proud of these amazing students. They represented Jackson County well! A special congratulations to our top winners: Courtney, Leila, Reese, and Hannah! Way to go!
I am so impressed with the amazing and insightful discussions my awesome 5th graders are having about immigration. We have been working toward this by reading a novel called Towers Falling, and learning about our own social units. Today we will watch part of The History Channel's "America: The Story of Us" - Cities, episode 7. The video is on YouTube. Students have an episode guide, but it is also linked HERE for you. If your child has time please allow her/him to finish this video over the weekend. I understand that this may not be possible for all families. Thank you! Every group did a wonderful job! The inventors that your child must know for 5th grade are Bell, The Wrights, Edison, and Carver. But I would say these awesome kiddos are experts on much more! Are they craving more about inventions? Send them HERE.
What's happening in Huss Class: Math: Multiplication and division of whole numbers using traditional algorithms. Science: We will preview for vertebrates vs invertebrates before Camp Wahsega, and then move in to physical and chemical changes. Social Studies: The Panama Canal, The Spanish American War, Theodore Roosevelt, and William McKinley. Reading: Students should be reading for at least 20 mins each night from a self selected independent novel. Ask your child about our Novel Project HyperDoc! Writing: We will be leaving narrative soon and begin writing opinion pieces ... I can hear the debates already! We are the Darth Greeners! Join the green side!
Want to see a group of 5th graders excited about research, DNA, world climate patterns, and math? Ask them to research a disease and then attempt to mimic its symptoms and transmission on the app Infection. #ProudToTeach
